For generations, the tradition has been to have fourth grade students learn recorder. We've all heard it (or experienced it) - the wonderful screeching sounds. The frustration of not being able to get the sounds out when you could somehow do it before. And have you ever picked up your recorder again? A few people may have, but the majority of us never looked at them again (happily). Why not teach students a simple instrument that they might actually use? Or that can transfer in so many ways. I begin the year teaching the students body percussion, then we transfer to cleaned out ice cream buckets, and as students improve, I want to allow them the opportunity to use actual djembe drums. Students will learn rhythm, beat keeping, and group performance. Beat keeping has been proven to improve reading scores across the board. Thank you for your help!
