My students are special in so many ways! Our class is a multi-grade class of 4th and 5th graders in rural northwest Alaska on Norton Sound. Elim is a mix of Yup'ik and Inupiat native people. They practice a subsistence lifestyle drawing on the natural resources available such as many types of berries, fish, caribou, moose, crabs, whales, and walrus. Their world is very small, but their energy and enthusiasm for life is grand. It is always difficult and expensive to get necessities in rural Alaska as everything has to be flown in by small plane.
