My students have a difficult time sitting still and sitting in their chairs for lengthy periods of time. They fall out or get up to move around because sitting for long periods of time is difficult for young children, particularly those with diagnosed disabilities. They need to be able to move during instruction without walking around the room and disrupting other children. Flexible seating allows the children an opportunity to move and wiggle while still seated at the table, increasing productivity and time on task. My students learn at a slower pace than typically-developing children and can become easily distracted and over-stimulated. The flexible seating gives them the opportunity to move and wiggle, which takes away some of the distraction and allows them to focus on learning new concepts.
