The use of technology is becoming more and more common in our world. My students enjoy using technology primarily for entertainment but lack the understanding of the numerous learning opportunities available through technology. My school has formed a committee with a project plan to incorporate a robotics program in multiple grade levels. This plan will begin with the 2016-2017 school year. This knowledge would then be applied and used in following grade-level robotics programs. The third grade would use the Sphero SPRK to introduce robotics and programming. I will be the third grade coach and plan to hold three different club sessions. Each session would rotate through a different set group of students throughout the course of the year. This club has the potential to grow over time too. The Sphero SPRK robot will cultivate an excitement and passion for learning that many students are lacking. The SPRK robot is a programmable robot that moves, changes color, and can be immersed in water. After downloading the application on mobile devices such as iPads or smart phones, students complete coding. Then, they can watch the robot perform the tasks they programed. The simple format of the app allows students to gain a basic understanding of coding. To promote critical thinking, I plan to create challenge activities in which students must program their robot to complete a task. This will require them to use a scientific mindset when approaching these tasks. Robotics can also bridge language barriers and facilitate language learning that many of our ELL students are attempting to overcome. My goal is that by introducing this unique, hands-on experience, students will take ownership of their learning and gain a passion for exploration through technology.
