This year I want to revise my reading program and have students focus on fluency and decoding skills. We have been working on reading comprehension skills throughout the year. While students have made progress, I know they can do better. For most kids, reading began while sitting on the laps of their parents looking at picture books. Many of my students did not have the opportunity to start enjoying books at an early age. They grew up without listening to how (English) words are put together, or to form sentences using appropriate voice and fluency. I plan on teaching students to love reading while implementing fluency and decoding skills through the use of technology and high interest, grade appropriate books. We will listen to audiobooks, then re-read passages together with the author to practice fluency. I can't wait to tape and play back their progress. The students will be transformed by what they read. There is no substitute for books in the life of a child. I am requesting 2 CD players and a digital voice recorder to help remove obstacles in order to make students become better readers. Research has shown that when a student hears passages from a book, they are better able to imitate the sounds, resulting in an increased fluency rate. By listening to the words in a text, the students will be able to hear phonetic sounds and this will lead to a higher comprehension rate. My students have struggled with reading since entering school. Once the frightful feelings of failure are removed, students will see that success is possible. Everyone has the power to learn and grow from their success. Since reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body, we need to read daily!
