My resource students are split into groups according to their levels and support needs. These groups will often max out at around 8 students, depending on the size of my caseload that year. Due to space limitations and student population size, both the computer lab and the special education areas of the school have been phased out in favor of portable laptop carts and full-inclusion in the classrooms. The students with special needs now face a lack of their own space, as well as restricted access to technology. The laptop carts are often reserved for other classrooms, or are in use for testing or intervention. When it comes to their small group intervention or support, they must make do with corners of a classroom or shared spaces with other small groups. This leaves the students with the greatest need of support with the least amount of resources. The advance of technology has vastly changed over the past decade, and our education should adapt to this. My students live in extreme poverty. A computer at home is a rare occurrence. This lack of technological interaction will only hinder them once they have graduated and enter the workforce, where those who have a familiarity with technology and its uses will have the edge. The chromebooks for my students will be shared among them, with the intention that they will remain in the same space but can be easily transported to wherever the small group interaction will take place. They will use the technology to write their papers, research topics for their classes, perform interactive activities to stimulate their learning and various learning styles, keep track of behavior and observations, and gain a familiarity with cloud sharing and even the beginning of coding that will aid them in their careers.
