What can we learn about electricity? How can we protect ourselves from the danger of electricity? Why can electricity be harmful? How? What happens when people touch others who touch the Van de Graaff generator? How does this "chain reaction" relate to an experience you have heard about? How are we impacted by electricity/electrostatic electricity? These are a few of the questions that my students will be able to explain after making investigations utilizing the Van de Graaf generator. The big question in my science class is "so what?" I want Science to come alive for my students in order for them to understand why and how their lesson relates to the environment in which they live- away from the familiar. Sure, we can rub balloons against fabric and talk about walking on carpet and touching a door knob, but there is nothing like fully engaging in an extension activity that helps in answering the "so what?" After various experiments my students will formulate questions of their own and ask their classmates questions that will lead to a better understanding of electrostatic electricity, one of the sub-units in our unit on energy.
