I have been leading guided reading groups to increase student reading levels. For this, I have been doing several units on foods, and animals. I have been using articles I have found on the internet or books I have requested from the county library system. I would like to buy some of these books so that I can have more flexibility in the timing of units. I would also like to be able to have had some books to start the year in small group settings with a chocolate unit. Once we move on to Service Dogs I like students to work independently with the reading skills I have taught them in the chocolate unit. When I teach the chocolate unit I have students look at books and pull out key vocabulary and processes. I use this topic to teach note taking as well and how to study a process. Chocolate is a very engaging topic most of my students have interacted with but don't have expansive knowledge about. Plus we do a chocolate tasting at the end of the unit as wrap up. They have to evaluate it like a food critic. Our Service Dog unit is very exciting for students because they think only of service dogs as being for the blind or police dogs. In this unit we explore as many different kinds of services dogs provide as possible. They love learning about all the different kinds of jobs dogs do. We use the skills learning the chocolate unit to learn in our dog unit. At the end of the unit I try to get a service dog to visit our classroom. For this students have to develop questions prior to a dog's visit.
