I teach 8th grade students reading class. Many of the students I teach either struggle with reading or have a low motivation for that subject. I have had to think of creative ways to engage students in learning reading concepts, such as literary devices and figurative language. Reading is a standardized subject area and is very important for them to have a high level of motivation for this topic. I can teach through this novel and have the students apply the story to present day life, identify important themes and about life in written form and or discussions. Therefore, we chose the novel The Hunger Games, which is a high interest novel with this age group. The books we have previously had for this class have been soft back books and are in bad condition with pages falling out. Many students could not follow along with the book at times with the pages falling out or missing. This problem is distracting for this age group and they may lose attention if they are not able to follow along in the book. I personally love this novel and have a zest for teaching from it. I feel that in turn will help the students be more highly motivated and more attentive in learning to love to read. I have had students say to me this book has been the only novel they have either read fully or really kept their attention. I want to continue to teach from a novel that will spark their attention and higher level thinking.
