In a first grade classroom, much of the learning is done at the carpet. So carpet time begins, and continues, with discussions about how to sit so that everyone is comfortable, making sure students are sitting the right way, and that everyone has their own assigned spot on the carpet. In a room with 24 six year olds a carpet with clear lines can have a big impact on personal space. The, "A Place for Everyone Carpet," has clear lines that will make defining personal space during carpet time an easy task. The color rows on this carpet can also serve as a tool for teachers; a teacher can recognize color rows that are exhibiting positive behavior to help encourage the rest of the class to stay on task. Limiting or eliminating distractions on the carpet creates an environment that is conducive to learning. If students know their personal boundaries then more time is focused on the content of the lessons being taught.
