Our 3rd grade class completes a unit of study on the book Because of Winn Dixie each year. In the past the school budget has allowed for purchase of a book for each student; however, with funding cuts next year that will not be the case. This unit allows students to engage in the study of theme, plot, setting, characterization, compare and contrast, main idea and many other fundamental reading skills that are needed to be successful readers. A classroom set of this book would allow students to delve into the wonderful world of literacy by affording them the opportunity to have their own book. Our school is in a very low socioeconomic area and many of our students cannot purchase their own book and to them books are a treasure.
