This book is a great book that helps students understand the Civil Rights Era and the progress made by the country. This story also brings in elements of literature that help bring characters to life. The class set will allow students to read at their own pace and reference back to answer specific questions. The text also brings social studies into their reading allowing for in depth thinking on the topic. I will have lots of questions and graphic organizers on this book breaking it down by vocabulary and chapter. This book has a lot of figurative language and this is a concept students (especially those whom English is not their first language) struggle. The students will be able to reflect on their reading when they have a copy of the book to read on their own. This will also allow me to see where a student is struggling immediately as all students are reading the same book and misconceptions can be identified right away before any assessment.
