I am moving to a new school next year, and realized that these students do not have access to a leveled library for reading groups! This means that there are not sets of novels and chapter books for teachers to use to teach leveled literacy groups. Reading groups are such a great way for students to get more individualized instruction for literacy, increase reading comprehension, and develop a greater love for reading. Having books in sets of 6 really helps me accomplish these goals. While I will have access to short books (less than 20 pages) on their reading levels, I feel that students learn comprehension strategies more effectively and feel a greater sense of accomplishment when finishing a longer story or novel. Leveled reading also especially helps lower level students and English language learners. Some of the books I have selected include high-interest low-level books. This helps the low readers and English language learners enjoy reading more because it is on a level they can comprehend, while still keeping them interested in what they are reading.
