These individual sets of student manipulatives will increase engagement in lessons and encourage hands on concrete thinking in the students in my classroom. The students who use these manipulatives will have a greater chance of retaining information learned during math, because they will have actually "built" the problem before working it out with pencil and paper. These students will create representations that will be easily transferred to abstract models on paper. Once they've created their representation through hands on practice, students will transfer their concrete models to abstract models on paper, which is where they will be able to show what they know successfully on state assessments, district assessments, and benchmarks. Concrete representation is a crucial step in increasing student achievement. With the place value disks, students will be able to create a visual representation of place value to understand how much each digit in a number is worth. The base ten blocks will provide students a hands on opportunity to build numbers and reinforce the place value aspect of numeracy. The money manipulatives will give students the chance to be able to create real life problem situations, where other students can pay for items and receive correct change. The multiplication games will be a hands on challenging game that gets increasingly difficult, improving engagement and achievement for a crucial third grade skill, multiplication. Each of these items will enhance my students' learning on a daily basis.
