Rekenreks are manipulatives used to demonstrate what numbers truly mean. They emphasize number sense-building activities that allow students to experience numbers in a way that builds a deep understanding of what numbers mean. Students can see the rich patterns that make up our number system. With the Rekenreks, students are given the opportunity to represent math using a manipulative tool. Math is taught through problem-solving and building numbers. Students will be able to make and discuss what they envision in their mind and create with their Rekenrek. This way, students are at the center of learning and will be able to talk through problem-solving while using a tool to strengthen their understanding. Rekenreks create a hands-on environment to learn from peers which will lead to more collaborative learning.
