Many of my students are not native English speakers, they qualify for free and reduced-price lunches, and they come from families in poverty. Even so, they are very hardworking students with the desire to learn. We try our best to help make learning relevant and meaningful to students, but that can be a challenge when they have limited exposure, background knowledge or experience. This is my first year teaching math to different grade levels, but the lack of strong conceptual understanding that is required for problem solving is a theme I notice at all grade levels.
