This year in third grade, one of genres we will be focusing on is mysteries. The format of mystery novels is an exciting, engaging way to teach students about important elements of reading like plot and character development. Since mystery is a new genre of focus, my students need access to mystery books at various reading levels, allowing them the ability to be successful with texts they can read. Some of the requested book sets include titles from Cam Jansen, Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, Nate the Great, and Third-Grade Detectives. Students will form book clubs around the same book in order to go deeper, to understand the text and learn from one another. My students LOVE book clubs and it is wonderful to watch them in action! They learn so much from each other and are digging deeper into the novels they read as a result.
