As a special education behavior support teacher my self-contained classroom consists of students (K-5) that struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges that require additional support in order to achieve scholastic success. My students are from various low SES (social economic status) areas around Texas. They are intelligent, sweet young men that often come to us from home environments that lack the safety and security that all children deserve. My classroom provides my students with a safe, supportive "haven" in which they are able to work on essential social skills, personal goal setting and behavior management as well as academic skills in small group settings as needed. My students often work while standing, rocking in their chairs, sitting in the floor, etc. My goal is not to try to stop the movement behaviors that students engage in while learning, but rather, to provide students with the freedom to choose to learn in the way that best meets their educational and "wiggle worm" needs.
