The roller ball chairs and cycling desks will give my students an opportunity for two main goals in my classroom. The first goal is that my students with ADHD are able to have time to move in my classroom. I surveyed several of them on potential choices and they all felt the cycling desks and roller balls would work best for them as well as give them choices of what works best for them. I then piloted this by bringing my own stationary cycle from home and letting students use it in between work times in the classroom. I found that students completed more work and were better focused in the classroom when they were able to move. Secondly, the stationary bikes and roller ball seats work directly into our Health curriculum for our nutrition and exercise unit in which students track, analyze, revise and implement goals surrounding nutrition/exercise to prevent disease and increase overall wellness. Students would be able to utilize the cycling desks throughout the day as a way to increase physical activity. Research supports exercise as a way to increase academic performance. This project will make a difference in my health classroom by helping students focus and complete work as well as assisting students holistically in all classes by increasing the amount of exercise daily which improves overall academic achievement in all classes. Moving increases oxygen intake and blood flow, which benefits brain cell activity which in turn helps students to learn. Funding this project will help to change students academics while improving their health.
