I teach in a demographic of the city that is a Title One qualified school. The majority of our students are poor, come from broken homes and don't have a lot that they can call their own. Most students don't go to the library because their parents don't want them taking books out, losing them and then having to pay for them. Therefore, it is very difficult to encourage students to read when they don't have the books to read. Our school is focused on Character Education and the theme for this year is kindness. I couldn't think of a better book to represent kindness than "Wonder." A class set would give my students the opportunity to have their own book to read. I know they would fall in love with the characters and hopefully, with reading! I want to be able to show kindness to my students through this beautiful book, "Wonder." This book exemplifies the meaning of kindness, compassion and friendship; all qualities that should be taught and encouraged in schools and homes. Please think about what you could do to teach these students about being kind, paying it forward and showing that we can help others even if we don't know them.
