I teach special education in a rural area of low income families. My students range from preschool-aged through eighth grade. Several of my students struggle sitting still for any period of time. Some kids need to stand in order to concentrate, while the others focus better by sitting at their desk- sometimes with items to help with their fidgeting! Currently my kids do not have many options from which to choose to sit, so the students take turns sitting in different areas around the classroom. The lighting in our classroom is bright, so there are some days we open up the curtains and turn off the switch! I have found by doing this some of my kiddos increase their level concentration. My number one goal for student achievement is for my students to feel relaxed and safe in their learning environment. These are our future leaders, and even though they have various learning disabilities I have high hopes that they will succeed in the years to come!
