I am a teacher of students in grades 1-5 who have special needs. Most of my students are one to two grade levels behind in reading and math. They often have to work twice as hard to keep up with a curriculum that continues to grow increasingly more difficult with each grade level. My students want to be successful, and they want to learn; they just need adults who believe in them and who will push them to try, even if they feel overwhelmed or frustrated. My 25 students come to me each day to work on reading, math, and writing skills that will help them become more successful in their general education classroom. They come from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, but the one thing they have in common is that they want to improve, and it is my job to provide them with the motivation, support, and skills to do just that.
