Students, with the support and encouragement of their teachers, will choose books to read for Self Selected Reading that opens windows into other people's experiences and opens eyes to the human condition. The books on this reading list plus others already available in our library will provide students with a deep, wide, and rich collection from which to discover stories about the interior lives of teens just like them and yet not. "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies." George R.R. Martin may write about brutal, magical, royal intrigue but his point transcends genre. A good book can do extraordinary things – transport us around the world, travel through time, experience history as it unfolds, and see life through fresh eyes. Stories, shared not only as memoirs and biographies, but also in fiction, foster compassion and empathy.
