Some may doubt the validity of teaching D&D to students. Some may claim it is just a game played in basements by a bunch of nerds. It may be a game but it can be so much more. Its educational potential is boundless in the right situation. It has the potential to reinforce math skills, writing skills, reading skills, and critical thinking skills in a variety of ways.
"Although the focus is on entertainment and using imagination to drive the story forward much of the game’s mechanics and functions promote educational skills that are vital to developing younger players and older players alike. Dungeons & Dragons gives the players an avenue to improve skills such as reading and writing, basic mathematics, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork that otherwise are lost in day-to-day life." -Michael Krebs, Dungeons & Dragons: An Educational RPG
These materials will allow my students to have more reference materials for the gaming activity (Player's Handbooks). These handbooks allow for students to be able to borrow these books and read them on their own time to understand the rules better. The other books requested allow us to add to our lending library. This lending library allows students to read up on their own. With the goal of leading their own D&D groups.
The game mats allow myself and my other club volunteers to draw out maps and scenarios that take place during the game. This boosts student engagement and allows for ease of play. The game markers allow us to show where characters and creatures are dispersed throughout the "dungeons". The polyhedral dice sets are used during play of the game and are vital to playing. These items together boost engagement and allow us to play more smoothly.
