The only thing I love more than reading are my students. My class is made up of all reading levels: English Language Learners, special education including those with autism and other at risk students living under extreme personal circumstances. I make sure my students understand that my classroom is a safe place where they are cared for and can take risks in their learning. Building and sharing a classroom culture that centers around a passion for reading offers a deep bond between the students. Engaging in meaningful discussions about a story allows for a common experience that can stir up laughter, sadness, joy and maybe even tears (mostly from me!) I think one of the most powerful things I can pass onto my students when they leave my classroom is the joy of reading since it is the most basic skill to being a life long learner.
