Based on data that I have taken on the students I currently serve, majority of them do not have dinner the night before coming to school, eat breakfast the day of school, and sometimes don't have lunch, either. I created a resource that allows students, both in and out of my classroom, to receive food/snacks at no cost. Every student that approaches my classroom is provided with a snack, a bottle of water, and a cup of noodles for lunch (or for dinner at home).
The excitement and appreciation on their faces when they are able to receive a snack after not having anything to eat for the past 12-24 hours, is what motivates me to continue striving to provide them with these essentials. Many of them express not being able to pay attention in class due to their stomachs growling. They aren't able to focus on the Pythagorean theorem or a five paragraph writing assignment because all that is on their mind is when and where they are going to be able to eat again. Though the school provides free breakfast and lunch, many are not able to make it to those meal times for many different reasons so it is important that I am able to keep this resource available to them.
