My students are such wonderful, amazing, and hardworking students. They are a very diverse group, representing a variety of socio-economic levels, academic abilities, nationalities, and more. Many of my students live in areas where they cannot have pets. Having access to a live animal, and being able to observe a live animal, brings students closer to the natural world. This experience can be life changing, and lead to students caring about organism other than themselves, as well as an interest in working to protect their environments. Having a living animal may sound like a small thing, but it has the potential to open up the door to amazing conversations about loving our planet, each other, and ourselves.
