Every teacher struggles with giving students a choice in the classroom. Whether it be choosing their partner or their reading center, younger students tend to struggle the most. I will be teaching at a high-needs school with a principal who has challenged us to think outside the box. I am choosing to allow a great deal of choice in my classroom, not only with academics, but with the students’ seating. In my classroom next year, I plan to have alternative seating options for my students. They will be allowed to choose to sit on an exercise ball, a wobbling stool, foldable chairs, stand at a raised desk, sit traditionally, or sit on mats at a low level table. “Sensory approaches such as alternative seating have been shown to increase attention and promote self-regulation, leading to improved classroom behavior and academic performance.” (Mosley,Kritsonis, 2015). These students need motivation and excitement to come to school everyday, and I believe that with choices like these attendance and lesson engagement will increase. My school has one of the lowest performances in the county, and I want to try something that will make a positive impact upon my students. Although my project will not be affecting the entire student body, I will at least help my students to develop a love for school, and create positive habits at an early age.
