My students are Exceptional Children in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. They all have some kind of disability that affects their ability to learn. The most common disabilities in my classroom are Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Both of these disabilities hinder a student's ability to focus. Students with ASD need the extra stimulation to keep their brains running, and students with ADHD need the stimulation in order to slow their brains down. My students are excited to learn about math, but they learn best when they do not have to sit in a traditional seat/desk. My students work best when they are moving. They are often seen standing during the lesson, walking around, sitting in odd places, etc. because these are the the ways in which they learn best. My students cannot focus when they are held to the confines of a traditional classroom. In order to help them overcome and adapt, I use different ways to try to keep each of them engaged.
