These books will allow my students to have easy access and exposure to a variety of books that deal with different cultures, current events, and things that are not usually required or suggested reading to high school students all of the time. By reading about different teenagers from around the world who belong to different cultures, my students will be able to learn empathy while reading about issues and events that they are interested in. The biggest complaint I get from students about the books that we are required to read in high school is that they are old, have the same type of protagonists, and the characters are from such a different time period that it is difficult for them to relate to it. With the books that I've chosen, there are many different cultures, ethnicities, and issues that are present where most all of my kids will be able to find a book that they can relate to and see the representation that some of them lack when reading the "required" reading.
