I am a 7th-grade literacy teacher and am passionate about making sure all of my students have access to rigorous, engaging, grade-level texts. However, I have many students that come in reading below grade level that need supports in order to feel confident and comfortable reading our curriculum novels. Audio books are not only a great way to model and improve reading fluency, but they also increase comprehension for readers needing supports so they can still feel confident participating in discussion and work around challenging texts. While my school does have headphones, they are shared and are removed from the classroom during testing, which happens four times a year. I don't want my students' access to texts to be limited during that time, so having a classroom set would allow for consistency in the supports and structures I am able to provide for students.
