Flexible seating is one of the big buzz terms trending in education right now. Although the look of the ideal physical furniture has changed, I have always believed in the concept of providing children with an opportunity to select their seating at times. In the past, my students could choose places such as, but not limited to, their seat, the carpet/floor, my rocking chair, a couch, and a bean bag chair. For over 10 years, I have created a culture of learning that provided my students the opportunity to make choices, have ownership and accountability, as well as feel some independence in their learning, and this includes seating. Our current challenge is to create an environment that encourages student choice and independence that is not antiquated. Rather than having just traditional desks and chairs that are always assigned by the teacher, I would love for my students to have modern seating with choices that includes wobble stools and wobble cushions. Many young learners have a difficult time sitting still and remaining focused. Based upon research and my prior teaching experience, I believe I will see more student engagement and work completion with a variety of seating that accommodates the needs of these primary learners. Being able to make choices in a variety of ways including where they work and from a variety of choices, will foster my young students to become more independent and successful.
