Our literacy block takes up a large part of our day. For 120 minutes a day, students engage in whole group and small group instruction. During small group instruction, students rotate through literacy stations where they work both independently and collaboratively. It is very important that the stations are hands-on and engaging so that students are successful during this time. The bean bag chairs that I have requested will be placed in our classroom library where students can enjoy reading books of their choice. The composition notebooks that I have requested will be used in the writing center. These books are great for young children because they include lines for writing as well as a box for illustrations. At the beginning of kindergarten, many children are drawing pictures to tell their story. These notebooks will show growth as students begin to write more throughout the year. The wipe and write alphabet books will be used at the word work station. These work well because many of our students come with very little letter-sound knowledge. These books offer repeated practice and give students an opportunity to build independence. The stampers will be used at the stamping center where students will practice stamping letters, words and sentences. All of these items will be used throughout the year during our literacy block and will keep students engaged throughout the learning process.
