Students usually enjoy reading historical fiction novels, certainly more than they enjoy reading historical fiction textbooks, that can be boring to most adolescents. They can be captivated by stories that give them the chance to imagine taking part in the events of the past, or to explore how people responded to dramatic circumstances such as those involving fear (Christopher Columbus finding the "new world"), discrimination (slavery, Civil Rights Movement), or tragedy (Pearl Harbor, September 11th terrorist attacks). By using more historical fiction novels in the classroom, students will be better connected in learning about the triumphs and tragedies of American history.

About my class
