Over the years, my teaching and my teaching environment have changed and evolved. I have had individual desks, round and rectangular tables, along with special places to read. When, a few years ago, it was decided that there were too many things in my classroom and I was offered help to reorganize, the things that were sent packing were my bean bag chairs, a butterfly chair, back rest pillows, and tents. With Flexible Seating now making its way into the research venues, these things are making a comeback, along with kneeling tables and standing desks, and I am looking to reinstate them. The children do not need their own table spot any longer, as they can have free choice about what work space best suits their needs. In reinventing my classroom again, there are areas in the room to give them the opportunity to choose the order of tasks, the place to work, and the option to work alone or with others. They do need, however, a place to call their own. With a large sectioned area rug in our gathering area, each child can have a spot on the floor. I’ve chosen a rectangle rug in primary colors to go with our room’s decor, which has color-coded work areas. We will have our cubbies for supplies, fewer tables and greater options for choice. I have chosen a small sofa with space under the cushion for books to add a comfortable work space while maintaining precious book space. So far the butterfly chair has returned, I have borrowed a T-chair, a ball chair, and purchased a Wobble Chair and Scoop chairs to determine what children prefer. These first graders get to try out/experiment with and determine which will be best in which to invest.
