Storyworks provides students with an article or story in each genre for every issue that they publish. Our classroom will use the magazines for learning in multiple ways: students will have interesting and entertaining reading resources at their seats, as well as being able to use these magazines during small group instruction. Left on their own, many students can turn down a book or even a genre based on the packaging, the misconceptions they have about that particular genre, or mismatched reading levels. Many of my students shy away from chapter books because they are intimidated by the length. Providing short stories and texts in this appealing, glossy magazine with articles from published authors gives students the opportunity to get to know authors that they may not have previously known about and encourage them to read more complex texts by those very same authors. Offering Storyworks in my classroom will mean we have a uniform resource that is available when we are working on specific skills and strategies in small groups and conferences. Additionally, Storyworks offers additional levels of the articles online which ensures all student needs are met.
