Most of these students have been through trauma and faced many challenges in their lives. They come from homes with a single parent, or are being raised by grandparents or older siblings. Coming to school is sometimes an escape for our students. Most of them have struggled through school and have academic difficulties. Our students struggle daily with how to survive in their neighborhoods. They are exposed to gangs, drugs, guns on their streets, and some even have these things in their homes. Our district, and especially our school, is a low performing, low income district. We receive 100% free or reduced lunches. Though they struggle with many of the basic classroom subjects, attendance, and social skills, many students enjoy expressing themselves through art and creative writing. This project was created to let them see their hidden talents by developing a "voice" through writing and be successful.
