I believe learning cursive is an integral skill for my students because it introduces a new type of literacy that will benefit my students into adulthood. In terms of short-term benefits, my students will experience the confidence that comes with learning a new skill, and many students who struggle with printing are found to be talented at cursive writing. My teaching process combines many different learning techniques. During daily writing lessons in my classroom, we begin by watching a short video to learn about the letter formation we are studying. Next, my students practice forming the letters on their individual chalkboards. Finally, I have my students complete a workbook assignment that allows me to see who still needs help with learning how to form these cursive letters. This lesson is transferred into real-world practice during our writing time in student's own writing journals using free-write, partner work, and topic-based activities.
