We currently use tables in Kindergarten, which work well for student collaboration. Traditionally, First Grade at our school has used desks, but education is shifting to a more collaborative learning environment across grade levels. We feel collaborative learning is key! Tables in our classroom would allow for more flexibility in grouping students for differentiated instruction as well as provide an environment for collaborative learning. The hexagon tables we currently have in our spacious Kindergarten rooms will not fit in the smaller First Grade rooms we are moving to. First Graders are still young and need space to move around the classroom. Rectangular tables would provide more arrangement options so that the students would have more open space. Learning through movement is an important aspect of early childhood development.
