Students in kindergarten and 1st grade need systematic and explicit instruction and materials when learning to read. Decodable books contain only the phonics patterns students have already learned. When students read decodable books, they use their knowledge of phonics and word analysis to decode unfamiliar words. Since children can figure out EVERY word, they feel successful. BOB books are decodable books that follow a sequential order of phonics skills. Once students are taught a specific phonics skill, they will be able to apply the newly learned skill within text using BOB books during small group reading instruction. This in turn will create automatic and fluent readers ready for more challenging texts in the upper grades.
