I currently serve 21 students with learning disabilities and an additional ten students who struggle academically. These students are in three different classrooms in fourth grade. Sixteen of the entire group are boys, six of them have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, two of them have Autism Spectrum Disorder and 62% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school of 700+ students is in a small, rural farming area with a low socioeconomic base. This information is important because it describes the difficulties they have to overcome in order to be able to learn effectively. Most of them have a learning style that incorporates kinesthetic and visual activities. Providing math manipulatives to help them learn fraction concepts will increase their understanding and provide them with a solid informational base on which to build as they encounter additional math challenges with fractions.
