By providing resources for second language learners in their native language in order to increase the biliteracy rate, we can influence rates of students eligible for the State Seal of Biliteracy, and thus promote biliteracy and its importance to all our district's families. Our approach is starting all the way at the elementary level by promoting the importance of literacy in their native language to our bilingual families. Two summers ago, we mailed books in Spanish to our Spanish-speaking students, including board books for the younger children and both fiction and nonfiction books for the older students. Last summer and throughout this school year, we sent age- and language-appropriate magazines that have sparked students' interests and promoted discussion with their family members. This year, we would like to continue to send home different print material in Spanish, including magazines, fiction, and nonfiction.
