I teach in a rural community and my students range from ninth to twelfth grade. Students in my classroom take high school advanced algebra and calculus courses and college dual-credit courses. In these high-level mathematics classes, the students are very competitive and want to gain a deep understanding of all the concepts covered in a class. Graphing calculators are just one resource that can be used to help them achieve their understanding. Unfortunately, many of these students do not have the resources to purchase a graphing calculator of their own. For those students who do not have their own calculators, they borrow from my classroom set of graphing calculators. The school district provides as many batteries as they can, but with 80+ students using the calculators every day, the batteries do not last very long. This results in calculators that do not have batteries, and therefore students are at a disadvantage.
