At our school, much time and energy is focused on Writers Workshop. Writing Workshop is an essential and beloved part of our classroom. Students are learning to write Narratives, Information, and Opinions, and revisit each genre over the course of the year with slight variations and twists. The goal is to see growth over time. In Writing Workshop, we gather in one area for the mini-lesson and have another designated area where they access writing material and tools. The Writing Center is a vital part of Writers Workshop, and helps promote independence and creativity! The Writing Center allows students to independently access the materials they need. It is filled with materials for every stage of writing. For example, tape, scissors, post-its, and different kinds of writing paper allow students to independently work on “story surgery” as they see fit. As third graders, they are also learning to become self-reliant by keeping track of their reference papers, mentor texts, and tip sheets in information binders. These information binders have become “silent teachers” to which they refer and use during all stages of writing: gathering ideas, drafting, peer coaching, editing, and revising! All of the supplies will add great value to our Writing Center, especially the pencil sharpeners, 3-hole punch, and date stamps that can be used again and again. Writing Workshop is a treasured time because it is when the students’ creativity can soar!
