My kids run the gambit from 9th through 12th grade. A significant portion of them come from lower income homes. The area is rural, and many of my students don't see a need for mathematics, and so are unmotivated to engage. Many of my students are very hands on, and love to work in agricultural arenas, as well as welding, automotive and assorted other very physical activities. They work best when given something to do. However, 2/3 of my class have been informed by the system that they just are not good at math. That is a lie I hope to combat. They have an amazing amount of energy and creativity, and often make me burst out laughing.
