The amazing school that I have the privalege of working for has developed an elementary school where children can receive an education while learning how that directly applies to the outside world. Every classroom has a theme; the teachers rotate and teach their content while integrating the theme of each room. K-2 classrooms will rotate around an umbrella theme of "around town." My specific classroom will be the vet/pet shop. I believe that it would benefit the students to have real class pet to observe, interact with, and monitor throughout the year. This pet would benefit the entire kindergarten through second grade, due to the rotation. This tiny animal would make countless impacts on an entire school. Teaching students lessons on responsibility, ecosystems, life cycles, habitats, cleanliness, temperatures, and so much more. I plan to have students complete a variety of activities in multiple subject areas all centered around our little friend. The pet I believe would most benefit our classroom is one that most of our students, if any, have not ever interacted with. I believe that a bearded dragon would be a unique, low maintenance, safe, and educational pet. The materials on my list are those things we would need to get the sweet dragon comfortable within the classroom setting. We will need two tanks, one for our classroom and one for my house. Our sweet baby will not be able to remain at the school over the weekend and the tanks are much too large to carry back and forth between the classroom and home. He will need a heat lamp in order to help regulate it’s own body temperature. Occasionally he will need to be spritzed with water to cool off, which is why a squirt bottle of water is recommended.
