My reading students have a variety of disabilities including ADHD, autism, and specific learning disabilities in decoding and/or comprehension. They are eager to learn about genres and enjoy books just like their general education peers. My school is place that celebrates learning differences. Because of this, I am able to teach small groups of students (6-12 per class) how to read for enjoyment and how to recognize different genres of reading. My students soak up the experience as I read to them daily and teach them about the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction, plot, setting, character, and theme.
