My students attend a school where resources are extremely limited and students and teachers are not always put first. As a result, my students often feel unsuccessful in their academic studies. Teachers have left mid-year, there is a lack of specials like art and music, and the funding to fix many of these issues is nowhere to be found. The opportunity my kids have is far less than the opportunity at many other schools in the state. If I could open them up to the wonderful world of literacy with a classroom library of relevant grade level books, they are sure to reach a higher level of opportunity. Literacy is something they will use and benefit from for the rest of their lives, regardless of their future career choices. Although my students often feel defeated, they have an incredible desire to experience academic success.
