My school is an extremely diverse community. We have many ESL learners, and a high degree of students with low social-economic status. We are also a small school, consisting of approximately 400 students from grades 5-8. I cater to the students who are struggling readers and writers. In an effort to help them believe in their abilities, we have created a school newspaper in which my students are responsible for writing the articles and creating the images for this paper. This activity helps build their confidence and makes them feel proud of their work. It also allows them to become editors of their own work and that of their peers. This accountability helps them learn to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as their ability to achieve greatness when they set their hearts and minds to the matter.
