Reading is so important! For some kids picking up a book comes naturally. They are eager to pick out a book and squeeze in reading any chance they can get. On the other hand, other students may be more reluctant to read. They might give off a loud sigh or eye roll. They might be anxiously watching the clock, counting down the minutes until reading time is over. These students can be readers, they just need more time and exposure to books that they might be interested in, in order to catch the reading bug. Students need access and exposure to a wide variety of diverse classroom books. Students need to be able to access and read books that they can relate to, learn from, and take off on new adventures. They need to see themselves in the lives of the characters. Especially now, students need to know that it's okay to be different. They also need to have an understanding, respect, and tolerance of others around them. These classroom books would help me in adding more diversity to our classroom library and would open up avenues of enriching classroom discussions. One of these books could be something that deeply connects with a student and makes them breathe a sigh of relief to know that they aren't alone or the only one who has faced a difficult issue. One of these books could help a student learn empathy and gain an understanding of others. Or maybe even one of these books just provides a student a brief escape from reality. It is my hope that with the combination of adding more diverse books to our classroom library and sharing/promoting them, that I can help my students grow as readers and learn about their own and the cultural identity of others.
